StarkWare announced on August 26 that a quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction had been mined in block 964199. The move spent a 10,000-satoshi output and paid a 5,179-satoshi fee. At prevailing prices the output equaled roughly eight dollars. The transaction used hash-based locks and off-chain signature grinding, methods drawn from Avihu Levy research completed in April 2026. Engineer Tomer Giladi turned the research into the working mainnet example.
Ownership focus
The approach lets holders move coins into storage that a quantum computer cannot open. It applies only to addresses whose public keys remain unpublished. Coins already exposed through reused addresses stay outside its reach. No consensus change occurred, so the network rules stayed the same. MARA Slipstream carried the nonstandard transaction past the ordinary mempool.
Utility and cost
The method replaces elliptic-curve assumptions with hash-based protections. Off-chain work added several hundred dollars in expense for this first run. CEO Eli Ben-Sasson described the effort as a passion project that shows holdings can be shielded ahead of any future soft fork. The test demonstrates an opt-in path rather than a network-wide upgrade.

The transaction does not render Bitcoin quantum-safe as a whole. It cannot assist addresses that already published public keys. Direct miner submission remains necessary because the format sits outside standard relay rules. A soft fork stays the preferred long-term route for broader coverage.
